In their fourth annual report on the most garbage-strewn sites in the region, to be released today, Save the Bay said plastic bags remain a severe threat, clogging wetlands, strangling wildlife and harming water quality. The 50-year-old environment advocacy group zeroed in on 10 hot spots ringing the bay where a total of almost 15,000 plastic bags were retrieved in one day last year.

Many of the spots are shorelines, creek mouths and storm drain outfalls where trash accumulates because of water runoff, winds and tides as well as illegal dumping.

The locations include Candlestick Park and Warm Water Cove in San Francisco, the Albany-Berkeley-Emeryville shoreline, the Antioch shoreline and Mare Island Strait. Plastic bags were the second-most-gathered item after cigarette butts, said David Lewis, executive director of the group.

Lewis said the study focused on plastic bags for the first time this year because cities in the region are grappling with ways to slash this pervasive form of waste. San Francisco, Palo Alto and Fairfax have enacted bans on plastic bags; others such as San Jose, Berkeley and Santa Cruz are considering bans.

Are reusable grocery bags that are made and shipped from China really just missing the point of reusable bags?

Second part, doesn't buying reusable grocery bags that are shipped from China, resulting in whacking great amounts of pollution being released in transit via gasoline use really just worst the purpose? I mean, if you are using reusable grocery bags to help the environment, protect marine soul/birds/animals, and to negate the petroleum that is used to make plastic bags, then isn't shipping the bags from China missing the underscore?

If Wal-Mart (and other retailers) are worried about the environment (vs. making money off the bags, and saving cold hard cash by buying less plastic bags) then why wouldn't they be buying/shipping the bags from local (meaning US) companies?

By the skin of one's teeth so everyone knows I think reusable bags are great and really want to start using them, but I'm having a intent time getting past the fact that the bags are made in China and shipped to the US resulting in as likely as not more pollution and evironmental damage than we'd be comfortable with. (Don't even get me started on the American job loss light). Thanks for your answers in advance.

whsgreenmom answered: Very upright question. I didn't really think about where the reusable bags I use come from. I can tell you I got most from ecobags.com and from heterogeneous grocery stores, but I never checked to see where they were made.

I don't think that buying a bag made in China defeats the purpose. Yes, there are shipping costs active in getting them to the store, but there are also shipping costs to get disposable bags to the store. I think a cull trip from China would out weight hundreds of trips from around the US for the disposable bags. I know before I switched I could undoubtedly bring 10-15 bags a week into my home. Now, I have many reusable bags and I'm down to 2-3 a month.

I don't think Walmart and many of the other chains are uneasy about the environment. They are just trying to capture retail dollars. Marketing departments across the world see the trend to being more ecofriendly and they want all those green dollars in their registers. I don't think that is a bad id. Walmart may be motivated by the bottom line, but they are doing a lot of good by it.

Here are a few changes they've made: They only stock concentrated laudry purifying- this reduces transportation costs and conserves fuel, they partnered with coke a cola to get to a line of recycled plastic t-shirts, they have made a commitment to reduce their electric bill and will be installing solar panels on some stores and implementing verve saving measures at other stores. I applaud them for making the changes.

Reusable grocery bags- How do your you remember to bring yours?

undir answered: I have two in general ones and I keep them in my car. I usually just use one at a time, so there's usually at least one in the car at any given time. After I talk about the groceries home and take them out of the bag I put the bag near the door so that I'll remember to take it with me to my car when I leave to work the next day. That way, even if I necessary to make an unplanned trip to the grocery store I have a bag in my car.

It only takes a few times to get used to this boring. I don't have to give those bags much thought anymore, I just take them with me as a matter of routine.
