The Net-a-Porter headquarters in Westfield shopping centre in west London is impossibly glamorous. The minimalist decor in the 44,000 sq ft state-of-the-art open-plan office provides an immaculate setting for the continual catwalk show of employees pounding the corridors in their statement heels. Of 550 employees, 65 per cent are women (worldwide Net-a-Porter employs 1,400 people). They are employed to research, buy, style, photograph, describe, upload, market, sell and transport the latest designer clothing and accessories around the globe. This exposure to fashion, combined with a hefty staff discount, inevitably leads to a phenomenally well-dressed bunch who experiment with fashion on a daily basis, a daunting prospect for the new starters each week.

The Net-a-Porter website stocks more than 350 designers, offering everything from underwear and swimwear to evening gowns and wedding dresses across two seasons: autumn/winter and spring/summer. The price range is vast, from £15 for a pair of Wolford tights to more than £20,000 for an alligator leather backpack from The Row. The most popular brands include Alexander McQueen, Christian Louboutin, Lanvin, Miu Miu and Gucci. There are three 'drops' to the site each week, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, when new clothes and accessories are uploaded and become available for purchase. A 'See what's new for you' personalised newsletter is sent out to subscribers after each drop, and sales surge around the world. Customers in Australia, for example, who shop on the international site, have been known to stay up until the early hours to get the new products. Items can also be added to a personal online 'wish list', a virtual wardrobe-cum-holding-bay for those things you want but can't yet afford. Even for those in the office, purchases will be delivered in an irresistibly chic black box with a grosgrain black ribbon.
