“Gossip Girl,” which first aired in 2007, made East-Coast prep a stylish option for teens and 20-somethings across the country.

Designers took note of AMC’s “Mad Men,” which chronicles the lives of 1960s-era New York City advertising executives. Men’s suiting took on a slimmer silhouette, and ties were noticeably pared down. Michael Kors’ fall 2008 collection was based on the show, and “Mad Men” costume designer Janie Bryant created a special-edition suit for Brooks Brothers.
