For the Grand Strand, beach trash "is more than just visually unappealing," said Christine Ellis, the Waccamaw Riverkeeper. "The trash that comes in is a surface area for bringing in bacteria, heavy metal and other pollutants. Good water quality is also important for our local fish and plant life and wildlife."

And there are other reasons beach/river sweeps are so important.

"Our natural resources, particularly our beachfront and waterways, are an essential component of the Grand Strand tourism offering, so efforts to keep them clean and safe are extremely important to tourism," said Brad Dean, who heads up the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce.

But because our natural resources are so plentiful, it's easy to take them for granted. More than 13 million visitors show up every year and expect 60 miles of pristine beaches and ocean to greet them. Local residents swim, fish, wade and boat in the Intracoastal Waterway system without having to put much thought into it.
