NEW YORK --If fashion really is a barometer of the times, we're in for a colorful, spirited, happy-go-lucky spring.

Or: We're in a denial mode.

By ignoring the economic downturn, the European monetary crisis, Arab revolutions, floods, hurricanes, earthquakes and technology overload, designers at New York's Fashion Week are telling us either to eat, drink and be merry or to escape to the 1920s, '30s, '40s and '70s.

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright sanctioned this fashion mood following the Diane von Furstenberg show, saying that fashion's happiness factor "shows a spirit of renewal -- positive, hopeful renewal."

Only the designers at Threeasfour -- Adi Gil, Gabi Asfour and Angela Donhauser -- addressed any kind of global turmoil with their Jewish-star prints and Muslim keffiyeh scarves, both presented in a positive salute to multiculturalism.

I’m thriving to see Lady Gaga tonight in Atlanta and I couldn’t be more all hot – I’m a unmitigated Gaga fangirl, and I’m almost as disconcerted to see what everyone else will be wearing as I am to see the show and gather the songs.
