Miami-Dade County’s brightest athletes were honored Monday at the annual Dade County Public Schools Scholar Athlete luncheon.

Over 400 people attended the event at the Hilton Miami Airport Hotel to honor student-athletes with an average GPA of 5.0, the large majority of whom played more than one sport during their high school careers.

Miami High graduate and National Football League referee Alberto Riveron was the ceremony’s guest speaker. Riveron, the NFL’s only Hispanic official, spoke to the crowd about his journey from officiating at the high school level in Dade in the early 1980s to college to the NFL.

More than $200,000 in scholarship grants were awarded to schools and students courtesy of various sponsors.

Longtime South Dade track coach and assistant football coach Nathaniel Hudson also was honored as the Dade Schools Athletic Foundation’s Coach of the Year. Hudson is retiring this season after 41 years of coaching.
