It was a few days before National Signing Day in 2010, and Marcus Washington was watching Bryant and the Lakers take on the Boston Celtics in a regular-season game.

Still playing basketball for Foley High School in Lillian, Ala., and an avid Bryant fan, Washington had taken his official visit to Nicholls and received a full scholarship offer from then first-year coach Charlie Stubbs. But he still had not made up his mind about which college to attend.

But while watching that Lakers game, Washington made a declaration.

"Kobe Bryant and the Lakers were down by 10," Washington recalled. "I was like, ‘If Kobe Bryant wins this game in the fourth quarter, I am going to Nicholls.' He won the game, so I called (Coach Stubbs) and said ‘I'm coming to Nicholls.' "
