The bells are attached to purses and handbags, and will alert shoppers if thieves try to steal their purse.

It is the third year officers have dished out cat bells to help protect people from becoming a victim of crime.

Acting Neighbourhood Inspector Nick Gjorven said: “The cat bells are a simple yet extremely effective crime prevention tool.

“If a thief tries to take a bag or purse, the noise of the bell will alert the owner and anyone they are next to and should stop thieves in their tracks.

“The bell going off when a purse or handbag is moved by the owner themselves also serves as a reminder that these items should be kept secure.
